1. What does the Crime Victims and Rape Crisis Center offer?

We offer individual counseling, advocacy, court accompaniment, rape crisis services (we do the 24/7 sexual assault exams, commonly known as ‘rape kits’), assistance with filling an Order of Protection, victim compensation, and emergency financial services if needed.

Monday – Friday 8am-6pm

4. What services are available during the COVID-19 pandemic?

All CVRCC services remain available, but we have implemented some limitations to in-person services.  In-person services are available through an appointment only after you have talked with an advocate or counselor over the phone first.  Call us at 901-222-3950 or our 24-hour Sexual Assault Hotline at 901-222-4350.

5. Can I get a rape kit (sexual assault forensic exam) without reporting to the police?

Yes, come during normal business hours (*see COVID question above).  It’s always best to call first to talk to a nurse or victim advocate about what to expect: 901-222-4350. 

6. Can I get counseling even if the incident happened years ago?

Yes, call 901-222-4350 or 222-3950 and ask to speak to the counseling team.

7. Can I volunteer?

We will be starting an Ambassador Program soon that will allow citizens to volunteer at outreach such as this one. Contact Sandy Bromley – 901-222-3952.

8. Are you all hiring?

We have pretty low turnover, but if we do have positions open, you can find them at www.shelbycountytn.gov/jobs.

9. Is there a charge associated with your services?

No, all services are free and confidential. 

10. If I’m assaulted on the streets of Memphis, can I collect money?

Our employees can assist with preparing an application for victims’ compensation, which is a reimbursement type fund that the State of Tennessee runs out of Nashville.  For the most part, that fund only reimburses you for actual expenses that are directly related to the crime, like medical bills.

11. Are your services free?

Yes they are. We do not charge for the services that we provide.

12. What age do you have to be to receive services?

We serve all ages of victims, from 0 and up.  We require parents or legal guardians to accompany minor children, except victims age 13 and older can consent on their own to forensic medical or counseling services.  

13. Is my information kept confidential?

Yes, we are required to keep all victim information confidential according to Federal law.  There are some limited exceptions, like when you discuss causing harm to yourself or others, or abuse towards children or vulnerable people.

14. What if you call me & my husband/offender answers?

We will not call anyone without their permission.  You can also give me a safe contact number where we can leave a message for you.  Additionally, any time we call out, the caller ID will only say Shelby County Government with a generic number so you won’t be able to trace the call either.

15. Do you help me pay for basic needs after a crime? Like utilities, rent, mortgage, etc.?

 We might be able to help pay a part, all, or nothing, depending on the circumstances.  We often use our partnering agencies, like CSA or MIFA, as resources for payment as well.  We can help you navigate that process if you call 901-222-3950.

16. Doesn’t your job make you sad?

Sometimes, but we are really grateful for the opportunity to help others.
