[ARCHIVED] County Mayor Lee Harris Statement On MOU To Increase The Pay Of Temporary Workers To $15 Per Hour

“In recent days, we have circulated a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to Shelby County officials to increase pay of Shelby County Government temporary employees to $15 per hour. This initiative builds on the combined efforts of the Luttrell Administration and previous Shelby County Commission, who increased pay of full-time Shelby County employees to $15 per hour.

I believe that the same reasons used to lift the pay for full-time employees can be applied to our temporary employees. If implemented, this initiative would increase the pay of roughly 340 active to $15 per hour. Temporary employees include, among others, election commission workers, custodial workers, secretarial staff, and law clerks. If implemented, the pay increase will use current budget resources and will not require an amendment to the budget.

Although non-binding, the MOU is an important statement of commitment to pay our employees, even those who are not full-time, at least $15 per hour. The MOU is also another opportunity for the various leaders in Shelby County Government to demonstrate a willingness to work together on a shared objective. Although the budget does not need to amended, this initiative will be brought before the Shelby County Commission for discussion in a public meeting before any action is taken.” – Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris
