[ARCHIVED] Mayor Luttrell’s Fight Blight Team Kickoff

Mayor Office

Kickoff Event for Shelby County Mayor’s Fight Blight Team on Friday, June 1st

This Friday Shelby County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell, Jr., will greet the 112 young people and 14 adults chosen to be on the second annual County Mayor’s Fight Blight Team. The event will be held June 1st beginning at 8:30 a.m., at the FedEx Event Center at Shelby Farms, 415 Great View Drive East, Ballroom C.

The initial session will be the kickoff for the blight teams as they begin their weekday duties of picking up roadside litter in key areas across the county. For the second year in a row, we will have crews of young people helping to address the growing litter problem in our community.

“Through this program, we’re not only able to provide summer jobs for folks, we’re teaching them leadership skills and to leave our city and county better than they found it. It’s great to see the next generation of Shelby Countians stepping up to help make a difference in our community” said Shelby County Mayor Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

The young people, ages14-24, will be paid $9 per hour. The 14 supervisors, all over 21 years of age, will be paid $12 an hour. The work teams will fan out Monday through Friday in various Zip Code areas from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The non-profit organization Clean Memphis will assist the County in planning the cleanup routes. “We work often with Mayor Luttrell’s office, and this is another great initiative to help us work towards our mission of making Memphis and Shelby County the cleanest community in the country,” said Janet Boscarino, Executive Director of Clean Memphis.

The County Mayor’s Fight Blight Team will continue through July with a closing ceremony to be held on July 26th.
