Shelby County Office of Preparedness Offers CERT and Active Shooter Awareness Training
“In an emergency, whether a disaster or an active shooter event, you are the “first boots on the ground” before emergency services have a chance to respond. Do you have a plan to survive? We offer free training to give you the knowledge, confidence and skills to stay alive and to assist those around you until the professional first responders arrive on the scene,” said Dale Lane, Shelby County Office of Preparedness (SCOP) Director. “We look forward to meeting you!”
Active Shooter Awareness Training: FREE!
Active shooter events can happen without warning and evolve quickly. However, you can train to survive. Having a heightened awareness and a plan can greatly increase your chances of walking away from this crime. Active Shooter Awareness training is a 90-minute lecture based presentation that teaches citizens how to quickly and safely react by activating the “Run, Hide, Fight” defense response when seconds count. The next public Active Shooter Awareness Training: Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m., at 1075 Mullins Station Road, Memphis, TN 38104. Register at www.staysafeshelby.us or call 901.222.6706
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT): FREE!
CERT teaches citizens how to safely and responsibly respond to hazards and threats that impact Shelby County. This 2-day class is taught on 2 consecutive Saturdays with lectures, videos and hands-on exercises. Students learn how to assemble a disaster kit and acquire life-saving skills in the areas of fire suppression, team organization, light search and rescue, medical triage and first aid, terrorism, hazardous materials, and disaster psychology. Graduates are certified for 2 years, receive a CERT ID card, and a CERT “go kit” to take home. Next CERT class: June 16th and 23rd, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 1075 Mullins Station Road, Memphis, TN 38104.
