Language Connection

Language Connection - Abstract Longo_Long FormIf you or someone you know is a non-native English speaker, you can be assisted at many organizations thanks to interpreters available.

Shelby County is home to over 2,000 nonprofits who provide services vital to improving the lives of residents. Shelby County is also home to more than 55,000 immigrants who speak more than 68 different languages. Mayor Lee Harris and the Nonprofit Committee’s Health and Human Services subcommittee, comprised of many nonprofit organizations, aimed at serving this unique and growing population. We hope to remove language as a barrier and enable nonprofits to serve every resident and create a more inclusive and accessible society. The program is initially scheduled for six months.

Shelby County government has used language interpreters across all health and community services for years. Beginning this summer, speakers of languages other than English can be served at the participating organizations below by use of SCG-sponsored telephonic interpretation service, Language Line. Over 240 languages are available with live audio interpreting, from Albanian to Zapoteco. When a non-fluent English speaker needs to access services, organization staff simply dial a number to connect with a translator who can speak Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Vietnamese, French, or another desired language.

The organizations participating cover a range of services, including legal services, housing, food access, mental health, resiliency training, workforce, early education, and financial counseling.
