Shelby County Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 783 square miles (2,030 square kilometers), of which 755 square miles (1,954 square kilometers) is land and 29 square miles (75 square kilometers) or 3.71% is water. The lowest point in the state of Tennessee is located on the Mississippi in Shelby County just outside the Memphis city limits, where it flows out of Tennessee and into Mississippi.
Of the total 783 square miles, 317 of which are within the city limits of Memphis. Shelby County has jurisdiction over all unincorporated areas of the county and provides some major services within the City of Memphis.
