Mission Statement
The Epidemiology Section functions as the lead office within the Shelby County Health Department for disease epidemiology. Our mission is to promote, protect, and improve health by providing information related to disease and vital events to the people living, working, and visiting Shelby County. By studying the frequency and distribution of diseases, we work to prevent the spread and transmission of communicable and infectious diseases within human populations and environments. Department responsibilities include:
  • Conducting routine case investigations
  • Investigating and interrupting outbreaks of disease and food-borne illness
  • Monitoring events and trends of reportable and chronic diseases
  • Reporting morbidity, prevalence, incidence, and trends to the medical community and other target groups
  • Tracing those who come in contact with certain diseases

The Epidemiology Section has expanded in recent years to become one of the most comprehensive programs in the mid-south to support a variety of public health programs within the Health Department.
