The Shelby County Community Services Agency's Self-Sufficiency Program offers support that will promote, empower and nurture families or individuals.  These services include but are not limited to case management, information/referral, advocacy, family and/or individual counseling and  voucher assistance.  The overall goals of the program are:

  • Coordinate and establish linkages between governmental and other social services programs to assure the effective delivery of such services to low-income individuals
  • Encourage the use of entities in the private sector of the community in an effort to relieve or remedy poverty conditions in the community
  • Provide a range of services and activities having a measurable and potentially major impact on the causes of poverty in the community or those areas of the community where poverty is a particularly acute problem
  • Provide activities designed to assist low-income participants
  • Provide on an emergency basis such supplies and services, nutritious foodstuffs, and related services as may be necessary to counteract conditions and malnutrition among the poor

Regardless of the services provided to the customers, they must be goal-directed. Goals should be results-oriented with predetermined measures used to evaluate success. Goals the program hopes to accomplish are as follows:
  • Low-income people own a stake in their community
  • Low-income people, especially vulnerable populations, achieve their potential by strengthening family and other supportive systems
  • Low-income people become more self-sufficient
  • Partnerships among supporters and providers of services to low-income people are achieved
  • The conditions in which low-income people live are improved

The Shelby County Community Services Agency Family Support Program is developed so that it focuses on the family or individual and attempts to improve living conditions. Elements that will be included in the comprehensive / case management program are an assessment of issues facing the individual or family, a written plan toward self-support for each family member, an array of support services made available to the family or individual, and a case management strategy used to track and evaluate progress. Predetermined outcomes will be used to establish customer success.
