How Can I Protect Myself From Mosquitoes?
Most mosquitoes are active at dusk and just before dawn. They also prefer areas that are shady, humid, and where there is little wind. The best protection would be to stay inside after dusk and just before dawn. However, this would be a very restrictive lifestyle and not possible for many.
If you are going to be outside during this time, you can protect yourself by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants that are loose fitting so mosquitoes can't bite through, and applying a mosquito repellent to exposed body areas. Light-colored clothes are less attractive to mosquitoes.
There are a wide variety of insect repellents that can be used. The most effective repellents contain the ingredient DEET. DEET is the common name for the chemical: N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide. Look for this ingredient in the active ingredient list. Be sure to follow label instructions for applying.
Apply insect repellent sparingly to exposed skin. An effective repellent will contain 20% to 35% DEET. For children, avoid products containing more than 35% DEET.
