Mechanical / Gas
Requirements
Every person doing business in Memphis and Shelby County as a registered and/or licensed mechanical / gas (Master A and B) installer shall file a bond in the penal sum of $25,000 that has been issued by an incorporated insurance company authorized to do business in Shelby County (one that has an office or agent located in Shelby County). Bonds shall be filed with the building official. All licenses expire December 31 each year and must be renewed in December. A $10 late fee shall be applied for up to two years after date of expiration. After two years, a new application, exam, and appropriate fees will be required for the issuance of a new license. No renewal exam is required as long as your license is kept current.

Mechanical Licensing

  • An applicant for a First Class Unlimited or a Third Class Limited Refrigeration Proficiency Contractor’s License must:
    • Be 21 years of age or older
    • Have a minimum of four years experience for a First Class Unlimited Refrigeration Proficiency License or two years experience for a Third Class Limited Refrigeration Proficiency License (qualified experience is defined as full-time employment and actively engaged in either installation and/or design in the appropriate field)
  • An applicant for a First Class or Third Class Steam / Refrigeration Operating Engineer’s License must :
    • Read and write
    • Be a minimum of 21 years of age for a First Class License or 19 years of age for a Third Class License
    • Hold and utilize a Third Class License for a minimum of two years in order to obtain a First Class License: This Third Class License holding requirement may be waived by the chief mechanical inspector if the applicant furnishes acceptable proof of five years qualified experience or if the applicant shows that he is the holder of a current, comparable First Class License from another jurisdiction. Qualified experience, as used here, is limited to experience in steam boiler / refrigeration construction, fabrication, repair, or practical operation.
    • Have qualified experience, which is limited to experience in steam boiler / refrigeration construction, fabrication, repair, or practical operations for a minimum of one year for Third Class licenses

Gas Licensing
Before making application for the Master A or B Gas Contractor License or the Class A or B Gas Installer, the following minimum requirements for examination shall apply. View a list gas licensing types and fees for additional information:
  • An applicant for a Master A or Master B Gas Contractor’s License must:
    • Be 21 years of age or older
    • Have experience (full-time employment and actively engaged in either installation and/or design in the appropriate field) for a minimum of four years for a Master Gas A License or two years for a Master Gas B License
  • An applicant for a Class A or Class B Gas Installer’s License must:
    • Read and write
    • Be 19 years of age or older
    • Have a minimum of one year experience installing or assisting in gas installation
