Memphis/Shelby Achieves Scholarship Information
Mayor Mark Luttrell, Jr. and City of Memphis Mayor AC Wharton, Jr. are proud to announce the presence of Memphis/Shelby Achieves.
Memphis/Shelby Achieves is recruiting its initial class of volunteer mentors. Under the tnAchieves umbrella, Memphis/Shelby Achieves provides an opportunity for public high school seniors to receive up to $3000 for Southwest Tennessee Community College or Tennessee Technology Center tuition. The heart of the program is the mentoring component.
Our mentors act as encouragers to first-generation college attendees. Essentially, the mentor attempts to eliminate the barriers as the student transitions from high school to college.
As a mentor, you are responsible for completing one, 30-minute mandatory training session. You will learn to guide students through the application process as well as ensure they meet financial aid and college registration deadlines. To accomplish this, mentors will also be asked to meet or communicate with students as least twice a month beginning in January 2012.
Perhaps one tnAchieves student from the Class of 2010 described the mentoring program best. She said, “tnAchieves introduced me to my mentor, Charlee, who helped me get on track and kept me focused. With her help, I was able to realize that anything was possible.”
If you are interested in spending only 10 hours annually to make a difference in the lives of some very deserving but underserved students from our community, please complete the tnAchieves mentor application form at http://www.tnachieves.org/become-a-mentor.html
. It is important to note that you will be subject to a background check.
