The Archives protects, preserves and provides public access to the permanent historical records of Shelby County Government.  To accomplish this the staff and volunteers maintain an onsite research area for customer service and exhibits.  Examples of materials preserved by Archives includes death certificates, marriage licenses, Circuit, Chancery, and Criminal Court records, photographs, military discharges and maps.

The Archives is also responsible for county record management, microfilming, and storage.  The Archives operates an offsite record center for the storage of temporary records and works with the Shelby County Public Records Commission to ensure proper records disposal.
