Commissioner Mulroy was elected to the Shelby County Board of Commissioners in the August 2006 general election to represent District 5.
Steve is a graduate of Cornell University (B.A.) and William and Mary Law School (J.D.). He is a tenured law professor at the University of Memphis, where he teaches Civil Rights, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, and Criminal Procedure. He traveled the country fighting for civil rights as a lawyer for the Justice Department for nine years and he is a former federal prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Washington, D.C. area.
In recent years, Mr. Mulroy has been active in local civic affairs. He coordinated the 2004 poll watch efforts for the Shelby County Democratic Party, advocated successfully for a voter-verified paper trail to prevent election fraud on the county's new computerized voting machines, and worked on other issues of election reform. He helped lead the fight to save Libertyland, which saved that park's historic Grand Carousel. He is on the board of the Community Legal Center, which provides free legal services to the working poor. Steve has been a guest columnist in the local media and has been a speaker and moderator at many local events.
Commissioner Mulroy is married to his law school sweetheart, Amy. They have two children, both in public school: Molly, 11, and Quinn, 7. He mentors a child, Brandon, 8, through the Big Brother program. He is a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where he serves as a lector and a teacher of Children's Liturgy. He is an avid runner, having run both a marathon and a triathlon; an unapologetic Star Trek fan; and the proud owner of Buster the Wonder Dog, obtained from the Memphis Humane Society. |
