Dr. George Flinn, Jr. was elected to the Shelby County Board of Commissioners on October 20, 2004 to fill the unexpired term of Linda Rendtorff. He was publicly elected to continue serving District 1 on August 3, 2006.
Dr. Flinn, a native of Memphis, attended Central and East High Schools. He worked his way through the University of Mississippi earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
While working as an electrical engineer, Dr. Flinn became deeply interested in how radio waves could be used for a myriad of purposes. He enrolled in the University of Tennessee medical school and earned his medical degree in radiology in 1969. After interning at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Flinn returned to Memphis and completed his Radiology residency at Memphis Hospital.
Dr. Flinn was appointed by the President of the United States to work at the National Institute of Health in Washington, D. C. while serving as a Commander in the National Public Health Service. It was during this time that George became instilled with the desire to serve his community.
Upon returning home to Memphis, Dr. Flinn started an outpatient radiology practice. He was one of the first to implement the practice of teleradiology so as to provide diagnoses to patients in any part of the county in a convenient manner. Today, Dr. Flinn has seven radiology offices that serve Midtown and Downtown, South Memphis, East Memphis, North Memphis, Germantown and Southaven. He is also the owner of Flinn Broadcasting with around 40 radio and television stations throughout the country.
George has two children and three grandchildren, and has great hopes to re-energize West Tennessee.
Commissioner Flinn is chairman of the General Government Committee and vice-chairman of the Public Works Committee. He also serves as a member on the Budget and Finance; Hospitals and Health; Conservation; Legislative; and Audit committees of the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, and is honored to serve the community he loves.
