Commissioner Sidney Chism was elected to the Shelby County Board of Commissioners in the August 2006 general election to represent District 3.

Mr. Chism has been an active business and community leader in Memphis for over 30 years.  He served as president of the Teamsters Local 1196 for 14 years; an organizer of the Southern Conference of Teamsters for 1984 to 1994; president of the Teamsters Joint Council 87 for nine years; chairman of the Grievance Committees of Anheuser-Busch and Stroh's and an officer of the IBT Brewery Conference.

A lifelong Democrat, Mr. Chism was a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention; chairman of the Shelby County Democratic party; an interim Tennessee State Senator and a member of the Memphis and Shelby County Land Use and Control Board.  He has been a board member of the United American Bank; Leadership Memphis; Black United Fund of Memphis and the Jr. Golf Association.   

Mr. Chism attended the University of Tennessee and State Technical Institute; he is a certified first class engineer in steam and refrigeration. He is President and CEO of S & L, Inc.  He is married and has four adult children and is a member of  Mt. Joyner Missionary Baptist Church.
