During Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, Desert Storm in 1991 and the observation of the 50th anniversary of World War II, Shelby County residents-and all Americans-became acutely aware of the sacrifices military personnel are called upon to make. When they return, the veterans of military service look to the Veterans Services office to help them plow through the paperwork and red tape to obtain benefits.
The Veterans Services office helps service personnel obtain more than $9 million in benefits a year. The staff counseled veterans on educational opportunities, Home Loan and Guaranty, hospitalization, pension and other programs. Part of this office's job is to locate or replace lost documents such as birth certificates, discharge papers, marriage licenses, and to assist veterans in upgrading less than honorable discharges.
The office works closely with all service-related groups such as Alpha Omega Faith Homes, a shelter for homeless Vietnam-era veterans, American Legion and the Veterans Administration Hospital. |
