The Mayor of Shelby County is an elected position. The Mayor is responsible for budgeting and strategic planning of some governmental functions across the county. The Mayor is elected for a fixed term of four years. The Mayor represents Shelby County at meetings with representatives and/or officials of the local, state, and federal levels as well as municipal governments to explain/defend Shelby County's needs, proposed initiatives/projects and challenges, to influence and seek changes to programs, legislation, policies and plans which impact Shelby County residents and to gain support and assistance with issues.
The Mayor acts as Chief spokesperson for major initiatives involving Shelby County, represents the County at meetings with major associations and groups to promote the County and its initiatives. The Mayor serves as the primary representative of the County with the media; giving interviews and defending and explaining issues/decisions as well as commenting on announcements and decisions from other levels of government which impact on the community.
The Mayor responds to issues raised by business groups and business owners, facilitates meetings/discussions to resolve issues (e.g. contracts, development proposals, County services and projects impacting business) with County Commissioners, Division Directors and other stakeholders. The Mayor meets with citizens groups and individuals to develop an understanding of issues or problems with County services, proposals and projects and facilitates the provision of the assistance by staff in resolving and addressing unique or particular issues. The Mayor participates in civic events to promote new ideas and existing programs to improve the community by attending meetings and delivering speeches and presentations. |
