Robert Wilson Jones has served as the Chief Public Defender for Shelby County since September 2002.  He was appointed to the position after serving as an Assistant Public Defender for over 25 years.  During that time Mr. Jones served as coordinator of the Capital Defense Team as well as Deputy Administrator to Former Chief Public Defender, A C Wharton, Jr., current Shelby County Mayor.
 
Mr. Jones supervises 68 attorneys and 35 support staff employees.  He is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association; a board member for Disproportionate Minority Contact Task Force, Access to Justice Committee, Memphis Crime Commission, and State of Tennessee District Public Defenders Conference; a committee member for the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee; and chairman of the board for Building for the Future (BFF).
