Founded in 1917, Shelby County Public Defender's office is the oldest in Tennessee. Its primary job is to make sure indigent citizens accused of a crime are represented by an attorney.

The Shelby County Public Defender's office handles an average of 1,400 cases a month with a staff of 41 full-time lawyers. The caseload has increased 50 percent in recent years. In addition to defending persons accused of a crime, the Public Defender's office develops legislation such as the program where convicted drunk drivers work off sentences. Another priority is to deter young criminals from repeat offenses. The public defender is appointed by the mayor with the approval of the board of commissioners.
