Law Clerks, Interns and Volunteers

The Office of the Public Defender uses law clerks, interns, and volunteers who assist the attorneys, investigators and other office personnel with a variety of tasks, including legal research, client interviews, and document preparation. 
 

Law Clerks
 
Law Clerks are first, second and third year law students, who work part-time and receive financial compensation.  Interns may also be undergraduate students and work on a part-time basis for credit toward their degree.

Social Services Internships

Internship
The Public Defender's Office has developed a partnership with the University Of Tennessee School Of Social Work.  Their students perform an invaluable service for this office.  The students assist the attorneys with case preparation by helping conduct client and family interviews, securing important records such as medical, educational, and legal, and assisting with case strategy for trial.
