Memphis, TN. - "New and emerging talent pools are like the onramps to progress for any community. If we don't engage these valued citizens in critical roles, the steady flow of traffic threatens to slowdown greatly without the free-flowing ideas, approaches, and insights they so often bring."
These comments from Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. helped to underscore his announcement today of a new system geared toward involving new and emerging talent in public service roles. Specifically, Mayor Wharton has launched an automated electronic notification system that will apprise selected groups, neighborhood leaders, and organizations of upcoming and current vacancies with the over forty official Boards and Commissions with Shelby County Government. The overall purpose is to involve leaders and advocacy groups in nominating qualified applicants for service on these boards who fit the title of "new talent."
Wharton emphasized, "When I say new talent or emerging talent, people immediately think of youth. And while this is often the case, my definition is much more expansive. Through this program and others, I am really seeking to engage those talented individuals who may fit the title because they are just new to being involved in their community at this level." He continued, " 'New' for me also means untapped talent, name those qualified individuals who aren't overwhelmed or tied down to an endless array of other commitments."
Ranging from the Land Use Control Board and the Industrial Development Board to the Shelby County 911 Board and the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission, opportunities for service abound. With the process directed by the Mayor's Office, the challenges in the past have been to comply with the varying qualifications that exist for different boards, staggered vacancies, and notification processes. To this end, the current notification tool will help to streamline processes greatly. Added the Mayor, "I want to thank the team with Shelby County's Information Technology Department for working with us hand in glove to design this program and alleviate many of the issues we've faced through an appropriate application of technology."
