Mayor Wharton Launches "Ramp It Up" To Clean It Up

Shelby County Corrections inmates begin work to clean entrance and exit ramps

Memphis, TN. -  Shelby County is cleaning up. Mayor A C Wharton and Clean Memphis announced the start of an ongoing clean-up initiative targeting entrance and exit ramps in the airport area.  RAMP IT UP kicks-off Jan. 22 at 9 a.m. with Shelby County inmates clearing debris from ramps located at Elvis Presley Blvd. and Brooks Road, deemed by many the most littered ramps in the county.

RAMP IT UP is a collaborative effort organized by Clean Memphis, Shelby County Division of Corrections, City of Memphis Division of Community Enhancement, and the Memphis Police Department.  The clean-collaborative is designed to support ongoing efforts to clean and beautify Shelby County.

"Discarded bottles, wrappers, cans, and all sorts of trash, this is our welcome mat to visitors when they travel the ramps in the airport area," said Mayor Wharton. "RAMP IT UP will focus on cleaning up these eyesores."

Each Tuesday and Wednesday, supervised Shelby County work release inmates will travel to select locations and spend four hours picking up and removing trash. The Division of Community Enhancement will provide bags, gloves, and safety vests.  MPD will provide traffic control and additional safety.

Inmates selected for RAMP IT UP are participants in the County's 3R Project designed to rehabilitate, renew, and reconnect inmates for successful re-entry into the community.
