Memphis, TN. - "Ask me anything." These are the words confidently spoken by Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton as he strongly encourages county residents to be active participants in the 2009 season of Ask AC . . . Your Voice in County Government, the Mayor's quarterly, public access television talk show. The 30-minute program kicks-off the first show of the New Year on Jan. 8 on Comcast channel 30 beginning at 7 p.m.
Shelby County residents are invited to electronically submit questions to the Mayor on a broad spectrum of county-related topics ranging from job creation to renewable energy, from business development to crime prevention, and all areas in between. In a no holds barred segment, Mayor Wharton will answer randomly selected questions from email submissions while focusing on potential outcomes, viable solutions, and strategies for sustainable communities.
Mayor Wharton will also reveal plans for an innovative community-college initiative. Dr. Nathan Essex, President of Southwest Tennessee Community College, will join the Mayor and provide an in-depth overview of the County's approach to combating issues negatively impacting college graduation rates. The initiative, Scholarships for Technical and Educational Programs (STEP), is designed to provide the "last dollars" students need to afford stated-funded community college and technical training programs paving the way for the increased likelihood of graduation.
To submit questions on any county-related topic or comment on the STEP initiative, residents must send an email to publicaffairs@shelbycountytn.gov by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6. Up to three questions may be submitted per email address. Residents must include their name, address, and telephone number. Mayor Wharton will answer as many questions during the program's Jan. 8 airing.
Ask AC . . . Your Voice in County Government airs quarterly and is designed to provide Shelby County residents a forum to ask questions, receive information, and gain a deeper understanding and greater appreciation for County government.
