2008/03/27 - Public Meeting to Review Concept of Macon Road Bridge over Grays Creek

Shelby County Government hosting Public Meeting
to Review Concept of Macon Road Bridge over Gray's Creek

Memphis, TN. -  Shelby County Government is hosting a public meeting on Monday, March 31, 2008 from 6:30 P.M to 7:30 P.M. at the Love of Christ Church (formerly the Woodland Hills Country Club), 10000 Woodland Hills Drive, Cordova, Tennessee 38018.

The Macon Road Bridge over Gray's Creek, was constructed in 1956.  The state of Tennessee bridge inspection program analyzes this bridge every two years and in 2007 classified it as functionally obsolete due to seismic issues.  It is important to note that the bridge is safe for public use.  Shelby County has hired the engineering consulting firm of Askew, Hargraves, Harcourt to design a new bridge.  The County and the designer will solicit comments from the public to aid in the decision making process.

Engineering design is anticipated for completion in 2008 with construction in 2009.  In support of the smart growth initiative and the concept of walkable communities, sidewalks will be installed along the bridge in both directions.  The existing bridge will remain operational until such time that the new bridge is ready for full traffic.  Commuters using Macon Road will experience little to no disruption during construction.  Once the new bridge is in service, demolition of the old bridge will be completed.
