Memphis, TN. - Shelby County's first permanent household hazardous waste collection facility will open to the public on Tuesday, November 27th at 6305 Haley Road (off Farm Road, between Walnut Grove and Mullins Station). The hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Saturdays only. Additional days and hours of operation may be added, as funds allow and as County hazardous waste managers gain further experience in the management of this, costly and sometimes difficult, form of waste.
The Ribbon Cutting will be held next Tuesday, November 13th at 11:00 a.m. for local government officials, media and other guests. Fact sheets and other information about acceptable and unacceptable material will be provided at that time.
The primary source of funding for the facility is provided by a $500,000 grant to the City of Memphis by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The facility will serve all residents of Shelby County; therefore, the City of Memphis has subcontracted the construction and operation of the facility with Shelby County government. Much needed additional funding will be provided annually by Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown and Lakeland.
Residents of Shelby County with valid identification will be allowed to bring up to 15 gallons or 100 pounds of household hazardous waste each month at no charge. Commercial waste, commercial vehicles of any kind and vehicles from outside Shelby County will not be allowed on the site.
Samples of acceptable
materials are automotive fluids, home maintenance products/chemicals,
pool chemicals, lawn and garden products, paint, batteries, cell
phones, computer systems (one per visit), fluorescent bulbs, etc.
Samples of unacceptable
materials are explosives, medical waste, radioactives,
certain electronics such as televisions etc.
