Memphis, TN. - Mayor Wharton began an extensive radio, television and print media campaign last week to inform Shelby County citizens about his upcoming Military Appreciation Luncheon, being held this Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 12:00 Noon at the Marriott Hotel. Now in its fifth year, the event will honor all veterans but present a special focus on our World War II veterans. With the announcement of the addition of World War II veterans to this year's luncheon and the renowned keynote speaker Lieutenant General Russel L. Honore, the attendance has climbed to 500. 500 is full capacity and the County is no longer taking reservations for the event. Under Mayor Wharton's leadership, the Shelby County Office of Veteran's Affairs developed this annual event to honor veterans currently in service and their family members. Mayor Wharton saw the importance for Shelby County Government to recognize all military personnel as well as their loved ones. This complimentary event includes music, special tributes, great food, speakers and good fellowship. The luncheon was created to ensure our Shelby County veterans and their families know they are cared for and supported.
Keynote speaker, Lieutenant General Russel L. Honore is the Commanding General of the First Army in Fort Gillem, Georgia. A decorated officer for over 30 years, Lieutenant General Honore is also a native of Lakeland, Louisiana. He most recently gained national attention for his effective leadership in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Lieutenant General Honore was asked to speak at this year's Veterans' Appreciation Luncheon ceremony due to his exemplary military record and commitment to our country as well as his compassion and successful leadership in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Lieutenant General Russel L. Honore will be available for a limited number of media interviews prior to and/or after Mayor Wharton's Military Appreciation Luncheon on November 14. If you are interested in interviewing the General, please contact Gwendolyn D. McClain at 901-545-4588.
