Mayor Wharton & Governor Bredesen's Office on Infant Mortality (The Butterfly Project) Hosts Its First Annual "Remembrance Ceremony"
|
Memphis, TN. - Today, Mayor Wharton proclaimed Monday, October 15th Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day in Shelby County and announced the first annual "Remembrance Ceremony". This event will be hosted by the Shelby County Office on Infant Mortality (The Butterfly Project), a joint partnership between Shelby County Government and Governor Bredesen's Office. Born out of the April 21, 2006 Infant Mortality Summit held in Memphis, the Office on Infant Mortality (The Butterfly Project) focuses exclusively on reducing infant death in Shelby County by working collaboratively with local partners who share the same vision. The Office on Infant Mortality (The Butterfly Project) organized the "Remembrance Ceremony" to acknowledge all those Mothers and Fathers who have lost an infant in Shelby County.
This special event will be held on October 15, 2007, at Serenity House at 6:00 PM.
The "Remembrance Ceremony" is part of the overall National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day which is celebrated throughout our country on October 15th. This day was established to provide support, education and awareness for grieving parents who may have lost an infant due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, still birth or other complications. Recognizing this day enables people to consider how, as individuals and communities, they can meet the needs of bereaved families and work to prevent the causes associated with these deaths. It offers us the opportunity to increase our understanding of the great tragedy involved in the deaths of unborn and newborn babies.
The shortest lives are still valuable, and the grief of those who mourn the loss of these lives should be honored. Observance of infant loss through a remembrance ceremony may provide validation to those who have suffered through this heartbreak. If you have lost an infant and want to participate in the "Remembrance Ceremony" event on Monday, October 15th, please call Antionette Holman in the Shelby County Office on Infant Mortality (The Butterfly Project) at 526-1822 ext. 246.
