Brian Kuhn has served as Shelby County Attorney since August 2003. He also served as County Attorney from 1982 to 1994, as an Assistant County Attorney from 1974 to 1981 and from 1994 to 2003, and as Chief Administrative Officer in 1981. Mr. Kuhn practiced law privately from 1977 to 1982 and from 1994 to 2003 primarily in the areas of employment litigation, civil rights violations, and administrative law for local governments. He served as City Attorney for the Town of Hickory Withe, Tennessee from 1999 to 2003 and as attorney for the Town of Collierville, Tennessee from 1994 to 1998. Mr. Kuhn has been a Rule 31 Certified Mediator since 1999 and served as a hearing panel officer for the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility from 1997 to 2003.
As Shelby County Attorney, Mr. Kuhn is chief counsel for Shelby County Government and acts as legal advisor to the County Mayor, Shelby County Board of Commissioners, and all departments, officers, and officials of Shelby County Government. He is responsible for an office of 15 attorneys and 16 support staff.
Mr. Kuhn is an active member of the American, Tennessee, and Memphis Bar Associations where he has served on the Board of Directors on two occasions. As one of the founders of the Tennessee County Attorneys Association, he has served on the Board of Directors or as an officer since 1985, currently serving as Secretary-Treasurer and previously as President and Vice-President. Mr. Kuhn is also a fellow in the Tennessee and Memphis Bar Foundations and has been active with Kiwanis, Boys Club of Memphis, Greater Memphis Arts Council, Memphis and Shelby County Urban Arts Commission, and Law Library Commission. |
