The Roads and Bridges GIS section has been successful in utilizing Digital Terrain Model (DTM) features to rapidly and accurately create surface models of drainage areas, 1 ft contours, road centerlines, edge-of-pavement, and hydrographic features. In addition, datasets created through digitalization include the location of fire stations, bridges, schools, municipal boundaries, and reserve/annexation areas.
This department has provided many public and private entities with an extensive amount of data that would ultimately be used as an accurate foundation for their GIS or various analyses that would be performed within their organizations. Federal entities include the U.S. Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
This section was also instrumental in the distribution of the new Pictometry oblique imaging data. It provided installation, setup and startup training to municipalities within the Shelby County area and several public entities within Shelby County Government.
The Roads and Bridges GIS section is presently deploying a departmental GIS that will allow personnel access to a centralized mapping and infrastructure assets management system. This system will allow more efficient dissemination and interpretation of information.
