The District is a subdivision of the State of Tennessee Government and is organized under authority of the Tennessee Soil & Water Conservation Act of 1939.  The District was established by a special referendum of Shelby County landowners in January, 1948.

A Board of Supervisors directs the work of the District.  They establish and implement programs to protect and conserve soil, water, prime and unique farmland, rangeland, woodland, wildlife, energy and other renewable resources on local, non-federal lands.  The Board meetings are open to the public with the dates posted in Shelby County Government's Sunshine List.  The District receives technical assistance to landowners, operators and groups from professional conservationists of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of USDA and has formal and informal agreements with other federal agencies and non-federal organizations.

The District office has a broad selection of free publications and educational materials.  In October, the District sponsors a Farm Education Day for Memphis/Shelby County Schools to promote agricultural education to students and teachers.   Flood plain maps, soil survey information, and aerial photographs are available as a public service of the District Office.  Interested parties are invited to visit, call, or write the Shelby County District Office located at Shelby County Agricenter, 7777 Walnut Gr. Rd., Ste 5, Box 22, Memphis, TN  38120-2100; 544-0228,  Ext. 3; Fax: 544-0394 or e-mail to betty.brown2@tn.nacdnet.net.

The District Board is a legally constituted unit of State of Tennessee Government with a five-member board of supervisors.  Currently comprising the board are:  John Charles Wilson, Chairman; Terry Longmire, Vice-Chairman; Gary Jamerson,  Secretary/Treasurer; Keith Wilder, Member At-Large;  David Sigler, Member At-Large; and  Kenneth Ray Sneed, Associate Board Member.
