Information For Health Professionals
This bureau provides ambulatory, primary and preventive health care services to a large population through innovative staffing and a network of strategically-placed clinics. The clinics not only offer help for the sick, but a full complement of services including prenatal counseling, school health programs, family planning, nutrition programs, immunizations and even some dental services. This bureau also serves county workers through an employee clinic, providing health care that saves Shelby County more than $98,000 in lost work days each year.
More than 17,800 children visited the night clinics at an average cost of $37 per child annually. Previously, children who got sick at night went to a hospital emergency room at a cost of $125 per visit. Primary ambulatory care is provided to more than 150,00 patients annually who make a total of 280,000 visits, through the pediatric night clinics and six freestanding primary care clinics.
Personal Health Services is also a research and educational arm of the Health Services Division. A study of Lyme disease associated with ticks was conducted with Memphis State University while a New Mothers study was undertaken with the University of Rochester. Programs offered in the community or through the public schools teach citizens how to be well and stay well, give information about family planning, infant care, nutrition, home and auto safety, and conduct outreach efforts for the homeless and those whose lifestyles put them at risk.
