What to do if you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted:
- First, get to a safe place, far away form the perpetrator.
- Call 9-1-1 or our hotline at 901-272-2020.
- If physically injured, report to the hospital immediately.
- Don't bathe or change clothing.
- Don't brush your teeth.
- If you have to urinate, keep the urine in a container to give to a MSARC forensic nurse before an examination.
- If you are assaulted orally, don't eat or drink until seen by a MSARC forensic nurse.
- If you don't want to report, you can still receive services at the center from 8:30-5:00 Monday-Friday.
Reporting Sexual Assault Immediately:
- Allows for the collection of forensic evidence crucial in the prosecution of the assailant.
- Assures the victim immediate safety and medical services
- Minimizes emotional and physical trauma.
- Allows the police to pursue the assailant more effectively, increasing the likelihood of apprehension.
