The purpose of the expansion of the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department's Vector Control Program is to prevent mosquito and rodent-borne disease epidemics. The program is science-based and operated by scientists (i.e., entomologist, epidemiologists, environmentalists) and technicians who specialize in vector-borne disease prevention and control.
The program has received regional recognition for its efforts to maximize mosquito and rodent control.
With city and county budgets not able to cover the needed expansion of the Vector Control Program throughout the county, the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Director along with County Mayor and other representatives drafted state legislation which enabled the county to seek additional means of revenue to provide expanded services to Shelby County residents.
