What You Should Know About . . .

Tobacco Facts and How Tobacco Affects Your Health

  • Did you know that food service workers have a 50% greater risk of dying from lung cancer than the general population, in part, because of secondhand smoke exposure in the workplace?

  • Tobacco use is a cause of cancer of the lung, lip, oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, pancreas, larynx, trachea, bronchus, cervix, bladder and kidney.

  • Smoking leads to an increased risk of pneumonia, influenza, bronchitis, and emphysema.

  • Cigarettes kill more than 400,000 Americans every year - more deaths than from AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, drugs and fires, combined.

  • According to World Bank projections, tobacco use is expected to increase by more than 500 million people in the next quarter century.

  • Cigarette companies spend more than $11.2 billion annually on marketing in the United States, much of it that reaches and influences kids.

  • Every day, more than 1500 kids in the U.S. become new, regular daily smokers; and roughly one third of them will die prematurely from smoking-caused illnesses.

  • There are more smokers in China than there are people in the United States.

  • Currently, more than five million U.S. kids twelve to seventeen years old are smokers.

  • In the United States, high school students smoke more than 900 million packs of cigarettes per year.

  • Canada has moved to ban terms such as "light" and "low tar" from cigarette packaging.

  • More than 5 million children alive today will die prematurely from smoking-related illnesses.

  • Nearly every adult who smokes (almost 90 percent) took his or her first puff at or before the age of 18.

  • Increasing tobacco taxes is an effective way to prevent and reduce smoking, especially among kids.
