The Shelby County Environmental Programs Department  is administered under the direction of Shelby County Public Works Division.  The mission of the SCEP Department is to create, encourage and manage the various environmental initiatives carried out by the Mayor's office and Shelby County Government that include:

Management for scrap tire recycle center, anti-litter education for the community, recycle promotion and coordination for Shelby County, household hazardous waste disposal, storm water education, and providing staff support for the Shelby County Environmental Improvement Commission.

The function of the Environmental Programs Department  is to improve the physical environment of Shelby County by increasing awareness and cooperation through environmental education.  A variety of programs and/or events have been developed through partnerships involving government, media, businesses, educators and volunteers.  The SCEP Department operates on grant funding from the State, and contributions from the private sector.

The Shelby County Environmental Programs Department constantly seeks new ways to heighten citizen awareness and to add more partners for funding and implementing projects and programs.
