Memphis and Shelby County Health Department BioTerrorism Volunteer Signup

WELCOME and THANKS FOR VISITING

The Office of Emergency Preparedness of The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department is recruiting thousands of volunteers, over the age of 18, to assist in operating clinics, or points of distribution for medications, in the event of a public health emergency or disaster.

In order to mobilize quickly, we are identifying and training volunteers now.  Your local health department, in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Health and local emergency preparedness agencies, hospitals and providers is developing a plan to deliver necessary treatment to all residents of our county in a short period of time.  Our plan calls for operating 20 clinics located throughout the community, each with the capacity to serve up to 6,000 patients per day in two 12-hour shifts.  More than 4,000 volunteers per day will be needed to staff these clinics.  Multiple community agencies will assist in supporting these clinics but the necessary staffing levels can only be achieved with the help of citizens such as you.

We encourage you to join our " Public Health Reserve Corps".  In doing so you will receive orientation and training and will be helping to build a strong, prepared volunteer resource base that can be rapidly activated during an emergency.

Thank you for your interest and support.  I invite you to take a few minutes to complete the following application.

          Yvonne S. Madlock, Director
Memphis and Shelby County Health Department

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Volunteers with immuno-suppressed systems, such as individuals receiving chemotherapy, recipients of organ or tissue transplants, individuals who are HIV/AIDS positive or who have skin conditions such as eczema or atopic dermatitis, are pregnant (at the time of the emergency), spleenectomy, seborrhea, severe (anaphylactic) latex allergy, over 65 year old, or have any other physical condition(s) that may contraindicate immunization, household/close contact to persons who have contraindications to the vaccine may not be assigned to work in a clinical setting but may be used as a volunteer where their health would not be compromised. There are a number of volunteer tasks that need to be done away from the clinical setting. All other volunteers must be appropriately vaccinated prior to being allowed to work in a clinical setting. All volunteers and their families will be given the opportunity to be immunized against smallpox either before the mass clinics begin or on the first day of the mass vaccination clinics, unless they have contraindications to the vaccine.

All volunteers must complete two (2) hours of training prior to working in an emergency immunization project. Some volunteers may need additional training based on their job assignments. Notice of training schedules will be mailed to volunteers as sessions are scheduled.
