Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Announces the Fourth
Comfirmed Case of Novel H1N1 Virus

Memphis, TN. -  A day after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Novel A H1N1 virus to be a pandemic, the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department has received confirmation from the Tennessee Department of Health laboratory of the fourth case of the virus in Shelby County. The specimen was from an adult Shelby County resident.

"As we indicated yesterday after the announcement from the WHO, the virus is still circulating. Therefore, we will continue to remain vigilant by monitoring and conducting active surveillance to be aware of any increases of influenza-like illnesses in Shelby County or in the region," said Yvonne Madlock, Director of the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department.

Citizens should continue practicing good hygiene including washing hands frequently with warm, soapy water, coughing into their sleeve or a tissue and throwing the tissue away immediately, and staying at home if experiencing flu-like symptoms.

For more information about the H1N1 virus, visit www.shelbycountytn.gov or call the Department's recorded information line at 544-6969.

Information regarding confirmed cases is available on the Department of Health's web site: www.tn.gov/health.
