Current Needs


The Shelby County Division of Corrections (SCDC) welcomes all skilled and talented individuals with creative ideas to design new programs and/or improve current programs for the benefit of SCDC clients and staff. The following is a list of our most needed programs / activities:
  • Clerical person(s): Assist interoffice departments with shredding, filing, answering the telephone, and day-to-day operations
  • Data entry person(s): Assist in inputting information into database and help maintain and update volunteer files, schedules, and events
  • Film production person(s): Assist in making orientation video(s) for volunteer training sessions (such as orientation and in-service training)
  • Life skill course instructors: Certified and/or licensed person(s) needed for the following:
    • Alcoholics Anonymous
    • Behavior modification
    • Domestic violence
    • Family
    • Financial planning
    • Health awareness
    • Interviewing techniques
    • Job placement
    • Marriage
    • Nutrition
    • Parenting
    • Peer pressure
    • Pre-release
    • Self esteem
  • Literacy, education, and vocational program instructors: Needs include instructors / facilitators for:
    • Basic math
    • Computer classes
    • Creative writing
    • English / Spanish classes
    • GED
    • Librarian (law and circulation library)
    • Poetry, reading, and writing
    • Sign language classes
    • Time-to-Read program
  • Public relations person(s): Create newsletters, brochures, and public announcements - help in recruiting and spreading the word about SCDC volunteer program
  • Recreational, and arts and crafts instructors: Needs include instructors / facilitators for:
    • Aerobics
    • Book club
    • Chess club
    • Choir
    • Crocheting
    • Dance
    • Drama
    • Drawing
    • Knitting
